Project overview

The Project

We, gamers, dreamers, and space explorers, are joining forces to create something unique: the first space simulation game, created by the community, for the community.

No studio in the world can realize such an ambitious vision without massive funding. And that's precisely why we're not a studio. We're a collective of enthusiasts, united by a common dream and the desire to build it together.

A free universe. A transparent universe. A universe built on passion, talent, and collaboration.

Our goal: to create, together, the ultimate space game, an open, living, and evolving world, built collectively on the principles of open source, participatory democracy, and artistic integrity.

Game Description

DyingStar is a space simulation game with immersive gameplay and a narrative universe.

F.A.Q

What game engine do you use?

  • Today, we’re using version 4.5 of the Godot engine. It’s easily accessible, open-source, and has great documentation.

Why not use Unity or Unreal Engine?

  • DyingStar is an open-source project. It’s only natural that we want to use an open-source game engine as well. This therefore excludes Unity and Unreal Engine (the license we use forbids the use of Unreal Engine). Godot is still a young engine, but with the right expertise, it can achieve results comparable to those of major engines. If we ever encounter technological limitations, we’ll be able to contribute directly to Godot’s development and propose improvements on the project’s GitHub.

Do you use AI?

  • The use of AI in any artistic creation is strictly prohibited. We want to produce human-made, original designs. AI also raises legal copyright concerns that we prefer to avoid.

How can I join the project and where should I start?

  • You can join the Discord server to chat with contributors and the leads of each team. Tasks or training may be provided. You can also check the contribution page.

Can the game be played right now?

  • The game is currently in the design phase, so it isn’t playable yet — it’ll take some time before that happens. However, we do hold regular player tests to evaluate technologies and content. These are announced on the Discord server and in the news section of this website.
